So, you’re looking for a portrait photographer in Amsterdam—maybe to get some shiny new photos of yourself, or perhaps a deliciously romantic photoshoot with your partner in the Venice of the North (a cliche that holds true). Or maybe you’re ready to level up your personal branding and think it’s time to show your face a bit more on the socials, like the modern entrepreneurs do.
You’ve probably browsed a few websites, shortlisted some portrait photographers in Amsterdam already, and maybe even sent an email or two!
You start getting excited as you imagine yourself in those stunning photoshoots you’ve seen in their portfolios: the gorgeous locations, perfectly color coordinated outfits, or hair flowing in the wind.
But then, as excitement builds so does another feeling—hello, stress.
Especially if this is your first photoshoot, it’s normal to feel a bit nervous. Excitement and stress often go hand in hand, but with the right preparation, we can tip the scales in the right direction.
So no worries—I put together five tips to help you enjoy a stress-free portrait photoshoot in Amsterdam. Let’s go:

You’re gonna feel as happy & carefree as vintage clothes maker Fede during her personal branding shoot in Amsterdam in autumn 2024
1. Choose the right photographer
I truly believe the key to a successful photoshoot is finding a photographer who matches your style and makes you feel at ease.
Luckily, there are many talented portrait photographers in Amsterdam, offering so many portraiture styles, editing styles, and portrait packages for all budget ranges.
You can always start by checking their About Me page to see if you feel a spark. But having a few touchpoints with them before booking is essential. Whether it’s through email, a call, or even a quick coffee chat, this helps you get a sense of their personality and approach.
I love making time for these conversations—it ensures we’re aligned and that you feel like there’s a real human behind the camera. And I get to know you, your needs and start getting the creativity flowing for preparing the photoshoot. Quick online calls and emails are my go-to channels, but I’m always happy to meet for a coffee too, especially if you’re scouting for wedding photographers.
It’s also important to discuss your goals for the shoot. Are the photos for social media, your website, or a gift to yourself? Knowing where and how you’ll use them helps us create the perfect result.

Pretty photos of you holding the fresh tulip bouquet you just bought, with Old Amsterdam as your backdrop? I got you.
2. Prepare ahead of time
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail—a bit harsh, but there’s some truth to it. A little planning can make all the difference, especially if it’s the first time you work together with the photographer.
I always create a mood board for your session. We’ll work together to select outfits that complement the location, time of day, and overall vibe. I’ll also share advice on makeup depending on what you want, but the piece of advice I stand by is to stick to what you know and love—no experimenting right before the shoot (same goes for haircuts or hair coloring, by the way). A healthy, glowy complexion is always a winner and looks so amazing in portraits, so don’t forget your favorite moisturizer or sunscreen.
I also recommend bringing a few essentials:
- A hairbrush
- Accessories like earrings or belts
- Makeup for touch-ups
- A lint roller
Don’t have these? No worries—I come prepared with a fully stocked bag of extras, just in case 😉
It shouldn’t shock no one when I say Amsterdam is also capricious weather-wise. Therefore, if we have an outdoor photoshoot planned, I always advise to bring some rain gear, just in case. My transparent umbrella is my trusted companion on outdoor shoots for this particular reason—as is my waterproof gear.
I also advise you to always bring comfy shoes. If the photoshoot requires heels or something fancier, best to bring them with you and change for the photos. The Amsterdam cobblestone streets and busy bike paths are not particularly stiletto-friendly—and we’ll move quite a bit, if we’re choosing an outdoor location.
To make sure you’re completely ready, I’ll check in with you the day before to go over the final details! Trust me, I’m as excited as you are before the shoot—and yes, sometimes a bit nervous too!

Would lie if I said it wasn’t absolutely pouring during this shoot. It was – but luckily, we knew our way around the streets and found some good, dry(ish) spots for the photo session.
3. Embrace the process
Feeling nervous is natural, but believe me when I say that it will fade once we get started. My job is to guide you through the photosession, so you don’t have to worry about poses or what to do with your hands.
I’ll give you gentle directions and keep the energy fun and relaxed. My goal is to make you feel like the best version of yourself and at ease, and I promise you’ll leave the session feeling confident and proud.
4. Pick the perfect location
Oh, how I love this part! The location sets the tone for the entire shoot, and after nearly a decade in Amsterdam, I know its nooks and crannies like the back of my hand.
Looking for a romantic vibe with your partner? I know so many quiet streets, charming parks, or cozy corners with dim lights perfect for a dreamy look. Want something bold and professional? I have a list of indoor locations ranging from minimalist business settings to quirky, soulful spaces full of personality — so I’m sure we’ll find the right one for your brand.
And if you have a specific location in mind, I’m all in! I’ll provide advice on the best time of day, lighting setups, and outfit choices to match the space. Plus, we can always adapt to Amsterdam’s famously unpredictable weather.

I’ll take you to the right spots in town, in the right season. Like this gorgeous spot in Vondelpark in late spring, with beautiful golden light.
5. Focus on the experience
At the end of the day, this is about YOU. The more you enjoy the process, the more your personality will shine through in the photos. You’re in beautiful Amsterdam, all dressed up, ready to be captured in your best light—so you’re allowed to bring as much Main Character energy as you wish.
Forget stiff poses or awkward angles; I’ll guide you every step of the way, keeping the session dynamic and natural. One of the things I hear most from my clients is how comfortable they felt during their shoot, even if it was their first time in front of a camera.
(You don’t have to take my word for it—check out what others have said here.)

The secret to a stress-free portrait photoshoot? Preparation, the right photographer, and a focus on having fun. Whether it’s your first time or your tenth, my goal is to make sure you leave the session feeling confident and excited about the final results.
And trust me when I say, I’m usually rushing home to see the beautiful images we took together and get straight into editing mode. This is the kind of excitement I hope you get from your portrait photographer in Amsterdam—whether that’s me or someone else
If you can’t wait for your Amsterdam portrait session, drop me a note—I’d love to meet you and get to planning your ideal shoot in this beautiful city.
Cheers x
